Authors Note: In the short story Thank you, Ma’am by by Langston Hughes. A kid named Rodger runs up behind this woman along with him trying to take her purse, which ends up having a big role and a big effect on the character and the story.
What happen when this boy, Rodger tried to take this woman purse and what occur was is the strap broke with the single tug the boy gave the purse from behind. However Rodger’s weight and then the weight of the purse caused Rodger to lose his balance so Rodger fell on his back on the sidewalk. Then this woman kicks Rodgers in his butt. Furthermore she ends up taking him back to her home.
She asked may questions when they were going to her house like, why were you trying to do that. What is not normal is that this lady takes this boy, Rodger to her house. To add on Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones cleans up Rodger and ends up feeding him. And best of all for Rodger he gets ten dollars to go get what he wants in the end.
The woman has an immense effect on Rodger, and not just by giving him ten dollars. Instead of this woman calling for the cops or calling for help or possibly even beating up this boy. But she ends up taking him to her own home. She could have done multiply things to him, but when you’re in dilemma like Rodger was, he probably got the best result out of the many things that could have happen to him. Rodger also had a choice, to try to run for it or to stay with her in the house. When Rodger was in the house he ended up staying and being respectful to this woman. That was probably one of the best decisions of his life.
Also this was not just one of the best decisions of his life, he also learn one of the best lessons of his life. He learns from this woman that did not have to do anything for him. Which he learns that it is not right to steal and you can get a lot of trouble for stealing, It could have been anyone else that would have called the cops. But she knew that would not teach this kid a lesson the kid would keep on doing this so that’s why she took him to her house.
Overall Rodger was very lucky to have someone as nice as Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones help Rodger out. I believe that Rodger did learn a lesson from this and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington might have stopped Rodger from going to jail possibly. In the end she really did have a big effect on Rodger and his choices for the future.
